Last night I had a dream that I was a little kid in a show, and Pina Bausch was directing it. She said to all of us at the beginning of the rehearsal, “We must not be afraid to fail. If we lose ourselves, we win.” She then, instead of teaching us choreography as we expected, began teaching us a song. It was a sweet little children’s song that explained that we were about to perform for the audience. She sang it herself, alone, in a somber, broken little voice. Her thick German accent was gorgeous and endearing while singing such simple childlike words in English. We began to join her after that. About 30 seconds into the singing, I woke up.
